In a major boost to the food processing sector in Kerala, the state government has formed the State Food Processing Mission for implementing the schemes under the Central Government's National Mission on Food Processing with the Industries minister as the chairman and principal secretary – Industries as head of the Executive Committee.

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has been implementing various projects like mega food parks and upgradation of abattoirs during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. MoFPI will now be de-centralising the implementation of the schemes under the National Mission on Food Processing.

Commenting on this development, Eshwara Venkat Kumar, proprietor of Kumar Food Products, a small-sized food products manufacturer in Vijayawada, said, “We welcome MoFPI’s decision to de-centralise the implementation of the schemes under the Union Government's National Mission on Food Processing. We hope this implementation takes place in every state soon.”

Seconding Mr Kumar’s views, Mary Tamilarasi, proprietor of Madurai Special, a small-sized food products manufacturer in Madurai, said, “Such a move will help the domestic food processing industry scale up to a new level. This, in turn, will provide smaller sectoral players like us with a lot of industry exposure.”

Objectives of the mission

The State Food Processing Mission has been constituted with a lot of objectives, which include:

  • Highlighting the importance of food processing for boosting farm productivity and the income of farmers
  • Help the state governments in bridging institutional and infrastructural gaps along the value chains and form an efficient supply chain for farm produces
  • Promote initiatives for skill development, training and entrepreneurship for meeting the requirements of both post-harvest management and the food processing industry

For implementation of the schemes, 85% of the funds will be contributed by the Centre, while the rest will be the provided of the state government.
