Fight bowel cancer with healthy foods

Discovery of a property of a flavonoid to provide new insights in cancer research

Oily and spicy food is a way of life for many in India and thus the country has gained a reputation for having the strongest stomachs. The scenario of a foreigner suffering from bowel issues due to consumption of Indian food is extremely common and one of the biggest reasons for this is the spice and oil content in Indian cuisines. Another reason why our everyday diet can land us in trouble is the consumption of meat in the form of chicken, mutton and beef.

A recent study by scientists in South Korea found that there exists a potent super-nutrient that has the ability to block the way the cancer cells communicate and instruct the other cells to multiply. Researchers have found a substance called luteolin, which is found in healthy foods such as celery, green pepper, thyme, chamomile tea, olive oil, peppermint and oregano, among others. The study shows that the substance blocks the activity of the cell signal pathways that causes the spreading of colon cancer.

Mechanism

The flavonoid is able to stop the secretion of the substance that the cells use for the spreading of the disease. According to Prof Jung Han Yoon Park, who headed the study, inhibiting of the pathways restricts the cancer cells from dividing and eventually leads to the death of the cell. The study also takes us one step forward in the study of luteolin.

According to Divya Sanglikar, corporate nutritionist at Healthji, an established health portal, “It is important to ingrain a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables in one’s daily diet so that the colon and the rest of the bowel is clean and healthy.”

While researchers and nutritionists advocate consumption of more fresh foods and vegetables in the daily diets, the ratio of natural to processed foods in the average Indian’s diet is decreasing every day.
