Dark chocolate, red wine key to healthy heart

Study claims red wine and dark chocolate good for heart, besides tuna fish, canned salmon, walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds and oatmeal

It is a well established fact that the way to a person’s heart is through the stomach. A recent report reiterated this and discovered foods that are good for the heart and induces positive feelings. Researchers claim that dark chocolate (containing more than 70% cocoa) and red wine contain substances that helps improve good cholesterol and keeps the heart healthy.

The report explains that dark chocolate contains resveratrol, which helps in controlling blood sugar levels, and red wine has catechins that help improve ‘good’ cholesterol. Among other foods that are good for heart are tuna fish and canned salmon, which are great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids and calcium. Vitamin E, magnesium, fibre and heart- favourable mono- and polyunsaturated fats containing foods that include walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds and oatmeal are also excellent for health, according to the new study.

Delicious and nutritious

According to food expert Shiny Das, “Red wine and dark chocolates are favourites of most food and beverage lovers. If these are made healthy, nothing could be better news.”

Though the availability of dark chocolates and consumption of red wine is quite less in India due to different factors, the new study will surely be a boost to the market of these products. According to renowned food technologist and chairman of Diversified Food Technologies, Mysore, Dr V H Potty “Resveratrol is a chemical being touted as an elixir for long life and it is supposed to be present in some varieties of purple grapes. This has led to the promotion of red wine as a health drink that can ensure extension of life span if consumed regularly.”

With the Indian urban customer becoming more and more health conscious and international wines and chocolates making their way into the domestic market, the research has surely paved the way for a health revolution.
