Food Processing Poll Feature

Demand for perishable food items on a high

In order to meet the increasing consumer demand, productivity and storage of perishable food items needs to be increased by using latest machinery and setting up more cold chains

Despite measures implemented by the government to improve food production, consumers continue to face the problem of shortage of food. This short supply is specially witnessed in horticulture and animal husbandry segments, which includes perishable food items such as vegetables, milk and meat, among others. According to poll conducted by FoodProcessing360, 75% of the respondents are of the view that increase in the production of perishable food items will stabilise the food inflation rates, whereas the remaining 25% did not agree with the same.

“Due to increasing population, food products have been on high demand, whereby consumer demand has surpassed supply, thereby leading to a shortage of food products. Therefore, large tracts of cultivable land should be allocated for agricultural purposes in order to increase crop productivity,” says Anup Joshi, director of Ganesh Pvt Ltd, a small-sized agro product manufacturer in Mumbai.

Of late, it has been noticed that most dairy farm owners are increasingly opting to slaughter their cows and buffaloes as the demand for meat is more as compared to dairy products, which aids them to earn higher profit margins. “Maintenance of cattle is also becoming more expensive due to the rise in fodder prices in the country. Moreover, 30% subsidy on meat exports has further encouraged dairy farmers to slaughter their cattle,” says Vinod Kumar Vidyarthy, manager of Russo Food Private Limited, a small-sized meat exporter and supplier in New Delhi. As a result, there has been a shortage of milk for domestic consumption.

Measures to be implemented

In order to improve production of perishable food items, the government should introduce more cold chains. This will prevent wastage by helping farmers to store perishable food items for a longer period of time. The government should also provide subsidy to farmers so that they can purchase latest machinery and adopt latest technologies to bolster crop production in India.
