November 19, 2009, New Delhi: The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) has no proposal to implement a new law in place of Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006. However, the government has notified Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006, which envisages the establishment of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for laying down science-based standards for articles on food, to regulate their manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is the nodal Ministry for the implementation of the Food Safety and Standard Act.

 

This information was given by Shri Subodh Kant Sahai, minister of food processing industries, in the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
