Smart Packaging for Food Monitoring

Carton Pack, based in Italy, and BoTest, a German sensor producer, have signed a technological agreement to develop innovative packaging materials. The FlexSmell project commenced in 2010 and, over a period of over four years, will enable food packers and handlers to monitor the quality of the products. The project, which is worth around €3.8 million, may also involve the adoption of technology to print monitoring packaging materials after the project completion phase.

This project will involve participation of players from diverse fields, such as those related with the development of organic and inorganic sensing devices and technologies, and sensors for electronic noses.

This project combines sensing technology with integrated RFID technology to collect data based on which food safety can be assessed. The project uses organic and inorganic sensing technologies to provide a flexible low-cost packaging material.
