Barry Callebaut sets up shop in Spain

Barry Callebaut, a renowned chocolate manufacturing company, recently inked an agreement under which it will acquire Spanish chocolate maker Chocovic. The agreement will entail the establishment of Barry Callebaut’s first chocolate manufacturing facility in Spain. This will add to its number of manufacturing facilities, which currently stands at 40 units across the globe.

At present, Chocovic is a subsidiary of the Nederland Group, and around 60 per cent of its sales base is industrial customers. The remaining 40 per cent is currently sold to restaurants, pastry chefs and chocolate enthusiasts. Barry Callebaut has taken the step as a part of its business strategy, to complement its product portfolio. As part of Callebaut’s business plan, Chocovic’s current brands and sales network will be used to establish Barry Callebaut’s position in the market. However, the deal has yet to gain the approval of the Spanish competition authorities. Barry Callebaut expects all the transaction activities associated with the deal to be closed by the end of the current calendar year.
